Foerstephyllum Coral Fossil

This specimen is a Foerstephyllum (Bassler, 1941) coral fossil. It dates to the Ordovician Period and was found in Jefferson County, Kentucky USA. Thanks to Wes for these fossils.

 

Modiolopsis concentrica Pelecypod Fossil with Cornulites

Above is a picture of a Modiolopsis concentrica (Hall & Whitfield, 1875) pelecypod fossil. Also the fossil has worm tubes called Cornulites (Schlotheim, 1820). Achatella carleyi Trilobite Fossil With Ceratopsis chambersi Ostracod

Above is a picture of an Achatella carleyi (Meek,1872) trilobite fossil. Also an ostracod is at the top of the image that appears to be a Ceratopsis chambersi (Miller, 1874).  These animals existed in the Ordovician Period. Acidaspis Trilobite Fossil Fragments

 

Trilobite fossils found near Maysville, Mason County, Kentucky USA dates to the Ordovician Period. Images were taken under microscope and field of view is 1.5 cm. They appear to be fragments of an Acidaspis (Murchison, 1839) trilobite.

Grewingkia canadensis Horn Coral Fossils

 

This image is of a Grewingkia canadensis (Billings, 1862) horn coral fossil with some borings. It was found in the area of Cincinnati Ohio USA. The fossil dates to the Ordovician Period.

Carabocrinus vancortleandti Crinoid Fossil

Here is a picture of a crinoid calyx identified as Carabocrinus vancortleandti (Billings, 1859) fossil at Museo di Geologia e Paleontologia Florence Italy (Università degli Studi di Firenze) in August 2024.  The creature lived during the Ordovician Period. It might have been found in Canada.

The species was named by young lawyer from Ottawa, Canada named Elkanah Billings. He would later be Canada's first official paleontologist. In his 1859 publication, On the Crinoideae of the Lower Silurian Rocks of Canada, Billings wrote, "The species is dedicated to Dr. E. Vancortlandt, of the city of Ottawa, whose zeal in the advancement of science has been productive of many beneficial results," The Ottawa Citizen newspaper wrote in a 2020 article about the Victorian era curio collector Dr. Edward Van Cortlandt who collected holotype fossil of this species.

Monument Composed of Fossil Corals of the Bardstown Reef

While visiting Bardstown Kentucky USA I found a monument built there in 1972. The plaque read "BITS OF HISTORY CASCADE RELICS OF HISTORY -- THE BELL, ROCK, TROUGH, MILL STONES AND LARGE ROCKS." When I closely examined the top section of structure it became obvious that was composed of maybe a hundred fossil corals. The monument is next to the The City of Bardstown Building, Bardstown Historical Museum/Oscar Ketz Museum of Bourbon History, and Jones Avenue Park & Don Harned Little League Field.

The corals date to the Ordovician Period and might be part of the Whitewater Formation (aka Bardstown Reef). I think these fossils might be Foerstephyllum (Bassler, 1941) and I have also seen the genus Favosites (Lamarck, 1816) to describe what these corals are.

I believe there is a monument to St. Joseph at the St. Joseph Catholic cemetery in Bardstown with its based composed of coral fossils like the ones pictured in this posting.
 

Hoplolichoides conicotuberculatus Trilobite Fossil

This picture is of a Hoplolichoides conicotuberculatus (Nieszkowski, 1859) trilobite fossil. It existed during the Ordovician period. The fossil was found in St. Petersburg, Russia. Fossil was on display at the Natural History Museum Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien) on August 2024.

Monotrypella briareus Bryozoan Fossil

This picture is of a Monotrypella briareus (Nicholson, 1875) bryozoan coral fossil. Might be under the genus Eridotrypa now. It existed during the Ordovician period. The fossil was found in Tyrone, Kentucky, USA. Fossil was on display at the Natural History Museum Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien) on August 2024.

Ectenocrinus (Heterocrinus) simplex Crinoid Fossil

This fossil appears to be an Ectenocrinus (Heterocrinus) simplex (Hall, 1847) crinoid calyx fossil. It was given to  Lucien Beckner (1872-1963) in earlier 1900s by Dr. William H. Shideler (1886-1958) of Miami University of Ohio. The fossil dates to the Ordovician Period.

This fossil appears to be an Ectenocrinus (Heterocrinus) simplex (Hall, 1847) crinoid calyx fossil. It was found by Lucien Beckner (1872-1963) in 1932 in the blue shale of Henry County Kentucky, USA. The fossil dates to the Ordovician Period.
