Plecia Twist Fly Fossils

 

These insect fossils were on display at the American Museum of Natural History (AMNH) in New York City in July 2018. They are called Plecia sp. (Wiedemann, 1828) aka Twist Flies. The fossils were found in the Green River Formation at White Mountain, Wyoming, USA and dates to the Eocene Epoch. Accession number is AMNH 28381.

Improved Fly Fossil Image


This image shows an insect fossil (some sort of fly?) found in the Florissant Formation of Teller County, Colorado, USA. It dates to the Eocene Epoch (56-33.9 million years ago) of the Paleogene Period. Thanks to Kenny for the microscope image. Field of view on image is 5 mm.

Plecia Fly Fossil



Plecia sp. fly fossils ("twist fly") displayed at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City, USA. They were found in White Mountain Wyoming, USA. The fossils appear to be from Green River Formation and dates to the Eocene Epoch of the Paleogene Period. Image taken July 2018.
