Acer integrilobum Plant Fossil


This image is of an Acer integrilobum maple tree leaf fossil. The plant existed in the Pliocene Epoch. Fossil was found in the upper Valdarno of Tuscany in Italy.

Triceratops Tibia Bone Cast with Signs of Teeth Marks


This fossil cast of the dinosaur Triceratops tibia bone. It shows evidence of gnaw marks from some type of predator or scavenger.

Fossil cast was on display at Children's Museum of Indianapolis Dinosphere exhibit as of July 2015.

The museum was founded in 1925 and consists of an approximate 44,000 square meter facility on a 29 acre area site. Their natural science collection contains more than 10,000 items. Some of the items in the collection are the dinosaur Dracorex hogwartsia, fossil of teenage T.rex, Christensen Mastodon, 3.5-4 billion year old Acasta Gneiss, and the Geisler geological collection. Coiled Crinoid Holdfast/Arm

At first glance, this fossil looks like a coiled up millipede or some sort of worm. This coiled crinoid holdfast was probably used by the creature to anchor itself on the seafloor so it would not float away. It was found near railroad tracks in Indianapolis, Indiana. If I had to guess, it is probably from the Mississippian Period.

Fossil Festival 2010

I will be giving a presentation Saturday on Fossils and the Internet.  A short presentation about different websites on the Internet pertaining to fossils.  The image above is a sheet, entitled "Fossils of the Waldron Shale".  I created it to help visitors identify the fossils they can find in the Silurian aged rock pile at the edge of the parking lot.  There will also be piles of dirt to find Devonian fossils and fluorite minerals from Illinois.

32nd MAPS Expo Starts SOON!

In honor of the Mid-America Paleontology Society (MAPS) Expo taking place March 26-28, 2010 starting this Friday and it being an Ordovician Period themed show, here is a freshly found conodont.  This conodont (magnified 100x) was found in material from Lexington, Kentucky and thanks to Herb for that.  As he reminded me, if you have not spent at least 2 hours with your micro material cleaning/decanting then you just have dirty material.

Let's talk about MAPS Expo.  The expo is being held at the Western Hall, University Drive, Western Illinois University campus.  FREE ADMISSION!!! Billed as the "world's largest all-fossils show" with lots and lots of exhibitors and dealers.  This year featuring a 33 foot (10 meters) duckbill dinosaur skeleton.  Silent auctions throughout the show and a 100 specimen live one at 7:30 PM March 27.

Experts will be on hand to help identify visitor fossils.

Dr. Robert Frey of Ohio will give the talk The Age of Nautiloids in the American Midwest: The Platteville Fauna in Illinois and Wisconsin on Friday, March 26, 2010 at 7 PM.

Don "The Fossil Guy" Johnson will discuss Laura the Hypacrosaurus and Other Duck-billed Dinosaurs on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 10 AM.

 MAPS member Bill Desmarais on Saturday, March 27, 2010 at 11 AM will present a program about dinosaur research expeditions in Alberta, Canada.

John A Catalani, and Ordovician cephalopod expert whose talk is titled "Life and Times in the Ordovician" presents at 1 PM on Saturday, March 27, 2010. He is a KYANA Geological Society member and I think I may have met him on a field trip.  Should be a nice talk.

University of Iowa professor Charles Newsom will help visitors with their fossil identification at 2 PM on Saturday, March 27, 2010.

Curator of University of Iowa Geoscience Repository will talk about storing, organizing, protecting, and documenting a fossil collection at 3 PM on Saturday, March 27, 2010.

Rhyncholampas Sea Urchin Fossil

This sea urchin fossil (enchinoid) is called Rhyncholampas gouldii. It is found in the Tamiami Formation of Suwannee County, Florida. The creature existed 2.5-5 million years ago (Pliocene Epoch/Neogene Period/Cenozoic Age).  The fossil was in a white, chalky matrix.

  • Family: Cassidulidae
  • Genus: Rhyncholampus
  • Species: gouldii

Thanks to Mary Ann for the fossils and my cousin Kenny for cleaning them up using sand/air abrasive cleaning. Unfortunately, I did not take any before pictures but they looked like Mexican wedding cookies (a little mound covered powdered sugar).

Fossil Prep Tools


Today's post is about fossil preparation. When I first started collecting fossils, I wondered how some of the museums got such nice trilobites. Who was finding these fossils intact like that with so much detail? After many field trips and considering myself luckily to find just a trilobite fragment, it dawned on me that these museum fossils were not found in that display state. As it turns out,there might have been just a small area showing of the fossil when it was found in rock matrix. It was the skill and patience of a determined preparer who coaxed the fossil form to appear from its stone tomb.  After that I realized that finding a good fossil is just the beginning, cleaning is where the work lies.

First off, we begin with safety. Everyone needs to wear safety eye protection when working with rocks. When using picks, knives, screw drivers, chisels, engravers and other tools pieces of rock can fly out and hit the user or observers in the eyes. So they must be protected! It is also possible the tool can break apart and pieces fly off.  Here is a pair of safety glasses I use.


The second piece of safety equipment I use is a 3M dust mask.  You need to wear one of these when using a Dremel brush to remove matrix from the fossils.  I also wear it when using the sand abrasion cleaner.  Even though it is in a box and under vacuum, it is best to take precautions to prevent breathing in any lime or dolomite dust.

Of course, when I put on the mask, I have to say some pseudo quote from the Star Wars movie like "Luke, I am your father" or "All too easy" after finishing cleaning a fossil.

This picture shows the Dremel engraver I use. It has 5 levels that allow adjustment to the force/frequency of this micro jack hammer. It has a modified tip on it.  An idea I got from a blog reader, Howard from Calgary, Canada.  He modifies metal rods to make fine engraver tips.

Here is the original tip that is useful for removing large sections of rock but somewhat cumbersome when trying to remove matrix from small crevices of the fossils.
 
The modified bit is actually an old engraving cutter (bit 105) from the Dremel drilling tool.  The small cutting ball wore off the bit just leaving a sharp point.  At the time, I could not think of a use for it but put it back in the Dremel toolbox. After obtaining the engraver and learning what Howard was doing with a sharper, fine pointed engraver bits, it gave me the idea to re-use this part.  As always wear safety glasses because the tip could snap off during use and hit something.
 
Here is the Dremel bit installed in the engraver. If I run into any micro-vampires, I am ready for action!
  
After removing larger pieces of matrix from the fossils, in my case Ordovician brachiopods.  I switch to the Dremel drill tool  This one has a stainless steel rotary brush installed.  At this point, in addition to safety glasses I put on the dust mask and use it out side to keep the dust out of the house.

I was using the Carbide Steel Brush but it quickly lost its bristles after cleaning only 3 brachiopods.
 
I have another Dremel steel brush in a different configuration.
 

Once I finish brushing the specimen, I take an old toothbrush and dip it in diluted white vinegar  (acetic acid) and clean the fossil surface.  I then dip the fossil in water to clean of any dust and vinegar.  The specimen might still need to be air abrasive cleaned which takes me to my cousin's garage.

 
 The fossil then needs to be cleaned again with water and should be ready.  In the past, I tried to clean the fossils with just the air abrasive cleaner but it takes too long to clean large matrix areas.  So the method I use now is a multi-step procedure involving a combination of cleaning techniques.

Unknown Devonian Period Fossil

I am not sure what this fossil is. It was found in Speed Quarry, Clark County, Indiana in Jeffersonville(?) Limestone. It is a Devonian Period fossil. The first picture reminds me of a stone flower with the petals radiating out. Maybe it is some sort of tube coral?  It reminds me of a Pleurodictyum cf. P. problematicum Goldfuss shown on pages 82-83 (figure 6) in the Fossils of Ohio book.

UPDATE: I got a message from the nice people at the Indiana Geological Survey (IGS) and they write it does appear to be a Pleurodictyum problematicum. Thanks to the IGS for that information.

Ordovician Period Tube Coral?

An exploration of the microscopic fossil world of the Ordovician Period uncovered this cluster of tube like fossils. Is it some sort of coral? Maybe a cluster of worm tubes?

I am not sure.

It was found in Grant Lake Formation of Bullitt County, Kentucky. The microscope was set to 40x magnification.

Brazosport Museum of Natural Science

While doing some research on Texas fossils, I came across an interesting website for Brazosport Museum of Natural Science in Clute, Texas. I believe this is just south of Houston. They boast of having "the largest collection of shells on display in the South with shells from around the world."

If I am ever near Houston, Texas, I hope to pay a visit to this museum. It looks like a great place to visit and take pictures.

One of the main items that attracted me to the website though was a section called "Meanderings of a Texas Fossil Hunter" by Dan Woehr. This is an impressive set of reports going from the present to 2003. Mr. Woehr has created a lot of documentation on his fossil collecting adventures with descriptions and pictures in the PDF reports. He has a number of reports about collecting fossils in the Cincinnati area that I can relate to. Most of his reports are about collecting in Texas which from what I read so far has quite a few ammonite, crab, sea urchin, and shark teeth fossils.

Elkinsia polymorpha

Here is a fossilized plant fossil on display at the Falls of the Ohio State Park in Clarksville, Indiana (across the Ohio River from Louisville, Kentucky).

It is called an Elkinsia polymorpha of the Late Devonian Period from West Virginia.

Fossils at Paris, France Landmarks

While vacationing in Paris, France I kept my eyes open to see if I could spot any hint of fossils in the building materials used to construct the urban landscape. I did not know what to expect since I am not familiar with the geology of France except for occasional visits to some very nice French websites on trilobites or fossilized plants.

It came as a pleasant surprise to find a lot of remnants of fossils in the large capping stones that make up the walls around the Siene River that flows near Notre Dame Cathedral and St. Michel Fountain in the city. The rock usually has a lot of empty cavities of where the fossil shell once existed. Spiral gastropods seems to have been the most common fossil in the large rock slabs used.




Here are some pictures of gastropod fossils from the National Museum of Natural History in the Gallery of Comparative Anatomy & Paleontology. This spirally snails are called Potamides lapidum. Maybe they are the species in the rock used to create the containment walls for the Siene River going through Paris?


The next two pictures of a gastropod fossil slab with the fossil cavities and a casting showing the shell shapes. There was a text in French describing it saying this:
Plaque de Calcaire siliceux avec moules externes de Potamides submargaritaceus BRAUN. Le moulage en plâtre montre la morphologie réele des individus. Oligocène, Aix (B. -du -Rh.)

A Google translation reveals this which might have taken some words out of context:
Siliceous limestone plate with mussels external Potamida submargaritaceus BRAUN. The plaster cast shows the morphology of real people. Oligocene, Aix (Bouches-du-Rh.)

Australian Fossils

Here are some more pictures of fossils found in southeast Australia by Bill.

I am guessing these first two are of maybe some sort of plant. It reminds me of a Sphenophyllum from the Pennsylvanian Period in the United States.



I am not sure what kind of fossil this is. It does not look like anything I find in my area. [UPDATE: I have been reading a booklet called Fossil Beds of the Falls of the Ohio from the Kentucky Geological Survey, 1993. On page 18 figure c, they have an image of a coral head that is in a shape similar to this fossil. It is described as "Ham-hock-shaped Favosites in bedrock in the wash area". The ones in these pictures look pretty worn but the large area was probably a lot of small corallites fanning radially out.



Is this some sort of stem (crinoid or plant)?

This fossil looks like a worn brachiopod. It reminds me of a Silurian Period brachiopod called Stegerhynchus.

More Fossils from Australia

Here are some more pictures of fossils from southeastern Australia. A visitor to this site named Bill sent them to me. If I had to guess, this first one is some sort of straight shelled cephalopod.


This second fossil looks like some sort of brachiopod.

This last fossil could be a cephalopod with is chamber segments but I am not sure.

Club Moss Root Fossil at Louisville Science Center

Here is a specimen from the Discovery Gallery hands on fossil exhibit at the Louisville Science Center. It is labeled as a 'Club Moss Root' but no location or time period included. I do not know much about fossilized plants but most of the fossils I have seen are from the Mississippian or Pennsylvanian periods (Carboniferous).

Research at this site about club mosses they were known as lycophytes of the genus Lycopodium (lycos Greek for wolf and pous Greek for foot).

I did not have a ruler but the specimen seemed to be about 15 cm long and 6 cm in diameter.
