Halysites catenularia Fossil

This picture is of a Halysites catenularia (Linnaeus, 1767) chain coral fossil. It existed during the Silurian period. The fossil was found in Lickershamm, Gotland, Sweden. Fossil was on display at the Natural History Museum Vienna (Naturhistorisches Museum Wien) on August 2024.

Holochroal Eye of Trilobite Fossil


The image above is of a holochroal eye of an Asaphus expansis trilobite fossil. It was found at Gillberga Quarry on the Baltic Sea island of Öland, Sweden on May 5, 1986. The fossil dates to the Lower Ordovician Period. I believe it was found at the Volkov Stage (Gillberga Limestone or old name Hjorthamn Limestone).




The original fossil was found by Dr. James Conkin and later prepped and photographed by Kenny Popp.

Asaphus expansis Trilobite Fossil


These pictures are of pieces of the Asaphus expansis trilobite fossil. They were found in Gillberga Quarry (Hjorthamn Limestone?) on the Baltic Sea island of Öland, Sweden. Dr. James Conkin (1924-2017) collected them there in May 1986. The fossils date the Ordovician Period (Volkov Stage?).  My cousin Kenny prepped and photographed them.

Fossil Meteorite Video



An interesting video produced by The Field Museum of Chicago, Illinois, USA is on YouTube about Fossil Meteorites. These objects fell to Earth and landed in an ancient sea. Over time like organic fossils there composition changed as the original material was replaced with minerals. The meteorite shown in this video was L chondrite and the chromite composition was measured to identify it.

They dated it by looking at cosmogenic nuclides. As the material traveled through space it was impacted by cosmic rays. This interaction caused the composition to change. By measuring the amounts of certain elements, the approximate age can be determined of the specimen.

The video states the meteorite was found in the Ordovician layer of a quarry in Sweden. I wonder if meteorites that fell during that period can be found in the Louisville area? Maybe the ocean dissolved the material before it could fossilize. It gives me something else to keep an eye at for when looking for Ordovician fossils.

Leperditia Giant Ostracod Fossil


Here is a picture of a Leperditia ostracod fossil at the Museo di Paleontologia at Sapienza University of Rome Italy. Creatures like this existed in the Silurian Period (about 430 million years ago). Fossil was found in Aminne, Sweden.

Syringopora-sp and Favosites sp colonial coral fossils


Here is a picture of a Syringopora-sp and Favosites sp colonial coral fossils at the Museo di Paleontologia at Sapienza University of Rome Italy. It existed in the Silurian Period. The fossils were found in Sweden.

Similar fossils are found in the Louisville Limestone of Louisville, Kentucky, USA.

Echinosphaerites aurantium Cystoid





These images show some interesting fossils found on the island of Öland off the Swedish coast (Suède). Fossils are Ordovician Period cystoids in the matrix from about 465 million years ago. They are identified as Echinosphaerites aurantium. The interesting thing about them is some are yellow fluorescent under longwave UV light.  See picture below.

UPDATE: Christian P. told me in an e-mail,  in Sweden these fossils are called "the Linné's apples".  Named after the Swedish botanist Carl Nilsson Linnæus. Learn more at wikipedia.
