Wiwaxia Fossil

This fossil is an Wiwaxia sp. (Walcott, 1911) which might be an extinct mollusc. It was found by Charles Walcott (1850-1927) in 1911 in Burgess Shale of British Columbia Canada. It dates to the Middle Cambrian Period (505 million years ago).

The picture was taken in June 2023 on the first floor of the Smithsonian Museum of Natural History in Washington D.C. USA.

Trigonia thoracica Mollusk Fossil

 

The fossil for today's posting is Tennessee's state fossil (I think, the genus name is slightly different). This bivalve mollusk is called Trigonia thoracica (Morton, 1834). It existed in the Cretaceous Period (144-65 million years ago). The fossil was found in the Tennessee USA.

The fossil was on display in the Evolving Planet section of The Field Museum of Natural History in Chicago Illinois, USA as of August 2020. Accession number is PE9161.

The genus named by Bruguière in 1789.

Hippurites rudiosus Mollusc Fossil

The image is of a Rudist mollusc shell fossil Hippurites rudiosus Des Moulins on display at the British Natural History Museum in London. These creatures existed in the Late Cretaceous Period. It was found Charente France.

Hippurites Bivalve Fossil

This image shows a Hippurites (Lamarck, 1801) marine bivalve mollusk fossil at the Museo di Paleontologia at Sapienza University of Rome Italy. Creatures like this existed in Late Cretaceous oceans.
