Carboniferous Plant Fossils

A fern fossil plate from the famous St. Clair, Pennsylvania site.  Fossils date to the Pennsylvanian or Carboniferous time period.  The white appearance is from the compound aluminum silicate or pyrophyllite.  This fossil was collected in the 1970s.

Tracking the Past - The Dinosaurs Are Coming

The Kentucky Gateway Museum Center in Maysville, Kentucky will be hosting the part of the dinosaur collection owned by John Hankla.  The exhibition is called "Tracking the Past - The Dinosaurs Are Coming" and opens June 7, 2011 and ends October 31, 2011.

Twelve dinosaur casts will be shown including: Tyrannosaurus rex, Deinosuchus sp., Potamomis sp., Struthiomimus sedens, Edmontosaurus annectens, Thescelosaurus neglectus, and Didelphodon vorax.  In addition the casts of 20 trackways will be shown made by eight different animals.

Fossils After the Diamond Saw

This first specimen is a cross section of a horn coral from either Michigan or Canada.  My friend Dave at Views of the Mahantango sent it to me.

The second cross section might be of a sponge found in the Louisville Limestone of Kentucky (Silurian).

The last cross section is a colonial coral found in the Louisville Limestone of Kentucky (Silurian).
