Megastrophia concara Brachiopod Fossil

Here is a fossil that appears to be a Megastrophia concara (Hall, 1857) brachiopod. It was found in the Silica Shale of Paulding County, Ohio, USA. The fossil dates to the Devonian Period (Givetian).

Years ago Dave at Views of the Mahantango gave me this fossil. Thank you for that.

Paraspirifer bownockeri Brachiopod Fossil

This brachiopod fossil is called Paraspirifer bownockeri from the Silica Shale. It is from Sylvania, Ohio in Lucas County. The fossil dates from the Devonian Period.

Petrocrania Inarticulate Brachiopod

Pseudoatrypa Brachiopod of Silica Shale

Pyritized Strophodonta Brachiopod

Here are two pictures of a pyritized Strophodonta brachiopod fossil. It was found in the Silica Formation of Sylvania, Ohio USA. The creature lived in the Middle Devonian Period.  Learn more about where these fossils are found at Olander Fossil Park web site.

Aulopora Corals on Brachiopods

Included in this posting are pictures of Aulopora sp. coral fossils that colonized a brachiopod shell surfaces. It was attempted to clean the corals using sand abrasive air cleaning but that was with limited success.  The process took too long to remove matrix from the corals and at times would detach them from the shell.  This matrix of Silica Shale is some what harder than found on similar corals from southern Indiana.

As a comparison to the Silica Shale, the next two images are Aulopora sp. corals encrusted on a Spinocyrtia euruteines brachiopod from the Silver Creek Member, North Vernon Limestone of Clark County, Indiana USA.  This limestone matrix is softer and these Devonian fossils are composed of a reddish-purple colored material.

Here are some corals growing on a Spirifer brachiopod.

If you click on the last to pictures to see the full image size and then magnify portions of the fossil, one can see some micro coral colonies that formed on both sides of the shell.

Paraspirifer bownockeri Brachiopod with Hederella Bryozoan

Here is a brachiopod fossil that I sandblasted. It is from Sylvania, Ohio, USA in Lucas County. This brachiopod is called Paraspirifer bownockeri (Stewart, 1927) from the Silica Formation. Also note the encrusting Hederella (Hall, 1883) bryozoan (blackish root looking material). Fossil dates to the upper middle Devonian Period (Givetian Stage).
