Petalodis Shark Tooth Fossil

 

 

The pictures shown in this post are of a freshly found shark tooth fossil from the Glen Dean Formation of Grayson County, Kentucky, USA. It appears to be a Petalodis (Owen, 1840) and dates to the Mississippian Period. This genus was named by the English paleontologist Richard Owen (1804-1892).

Zeacrinites wortheni Crinoid Calyx


This fossil was found in the Glen Dean Member of Grayson County, Kentucky USA. It is a crinoid calyx fossil that appears to be a Zeacrinites wortheni (Hall, 1858). The fossil dates to the Mississippian Period. The next three pictures show it from three more sides. Rule is in one centimeter blocks.

Tholocrinus spinosus Calyx Crinoid Fossil


These pictures are of a recent fossil find from the Glen Dean Member of Grayson County, Kentucky USA. It is a crinoid calyx fossil that appears to be a Tholocrinus spinosus (Wood, 1909). The fossil dates to the Mississippian Period.  Thanks to Kenny for the images.

 

In 1909, Elvira Wood (1865-1928) published A Critical Summary of Troost's Unpublished Manuscript on the Crinoids of Tennessee. On page 93, she names a new crinoid species Hydreionocrinus spinosus after the fossil by Wetherby who described it in 1881 as Hydreionocrinus depressus found by Troost. She writes that Wetherby had actually found a new species and thus she names it. It's genus was later changed to Tholocrinus (Kirk, 1939).

Pterotocrinus acutus Crinoid Calyx With Snail

 


This picture is a recent fossil find from the Glen Dean Member of Grayson County, Kentucky USA. It is a crinoid calyx fossil that appears to be a Pterotocrinus acutus (Wetherby, 1879). The fossil dates to the Mississippian Period. 

The most interesting part of the fossil is when it photographed from the top revealing a gastropod was attached to its anal tube when they both died. A somewhat common relationship found in the fossil record between these two creatures.

Platyceras Snail Fossil

 

Here is a recent find from Grayson County, Kentucky USA. It is a gastropod fossil that appears to be Platyceras sp. (Conrad, 1840), genus is also known as Orthonychia (Hall, 1843). Fossil dates to the Mississippian Period of the Glen Dean Member.

This crinoid appears to be a Bicidiocrinus crinoid calyx fossil. It was found in the Glen Dean Member of Grayson County, Kentucky, USA. The fossilized animal dates to Chesterian, Upper Mississippian Period. Thanks to Kenny for the images.

Zeacrinites wortheni Crinoid Calyx Fossil with Stem


This crinoid appears to be a Zeacrinites wortheni (Hall, 1858) crinoid calyx fossil. As a bonus, this calyx has part of its stem. It was found in the Glen Dean Member of Grayson County, Kentucky, USA. The fossilized animal dates to Chesterian, Upper Mississippian Period. I believe this species was named for a paleontologist from Illinois named Amos Henry Worthen (1813-1888). Worthern was James Hall's assistant while he was State Geologists of Iowa 1855-1857.


Next to the calyx is some intricate Fenestella bryozoan fossils.

Cliothyridina sublamellosa Brachiopod with Hederella Bryozoan Fossil


This image shows what appears to be a Hederella bryozoan and spirobis (palaeoconchus?) that grew on a Cliothyridina sublamellosa brachiopod fossil. Fossils were found in the Glen Dean layer at Grayson County, Kentucky, USA. These creatures existed in the Mississippian Period.

Reticulariina Brachiopod Fossil Spines

Pterocrinus acutus Crinoid with Snail Fossil


This crinoid calyx appears to be a Pterocrinus acutus (Wetherby, 1879). It has a snail fossil fossilized with it. The animals existed in the Mississippian Period and were found in the Glen Dean member of Grayson County Kentucky USA.

Pterocrinus Crinoid Calyx with Gastropod Fossil


This calyx was found while sifting through matrix while looking for dis-articulated crinoid arms for another fossil. It is quite a find measuring a little over 3 cm in width and it has part of gastropod fossil (see arrow) located near the top of its folded up arms.

This crinoid appears to be a Pterocrinus acutus (Wetherby, 1879). The creature existed in the Mississippian Period and was found in the Glen Dean member of Grayson County Kentucky USA. This next image has 3 arrows highlighting the spines on the arms.
