Pecopteris nervous oblongata Plant Fossil

This picture is of a Pecopteris nervous oblongata plant fossil at the Museo di Paleontologia at Sapienza University of Rome Italy. Plants like this existed at the time of the Carboniferous Period. The fossil was found in a unknown locality.

50 Year Anniversary of Devonian Fossil Fish Find in Cleveland

The Cleveland Museum of Natural History is celebrating the 50th anniversary of the start of excavating fossil fishes from their area. In 1965 construction to create I-71 road connecting downtown Cleveland with its southwestern suburbs revealed a treasure trove of Devonian fossils.

The animals fossilized after their remains sank to the ocean bottom and settled in to the sediment that would turn into the Cleveland Shale. The team worked on extracting fossils and shale from the project till 1968. Animals like the Cladoelache shark and Dunkelosteous arthrodire where found there.

This brachiopod fossil is called Paraspirifer bownockeri from the Silica Shale. It is from Sylvania, Ohio in Lucas County. The fossil dates from the Devonian Period.

These images are of the brachiopod fossil Goniorhynchia boueti (Davidson). It was found in the Boueti Bed, Forest Marble, Great Oolite (Bathonian). The fossil was found in Herbury, Langton Herring, Dorset, England. It dates to Middle Jurassic Period.

This brachiopod fossil is known as Digonella digona (Sowerby). It was found in Calcaire de Langrune Horizon of Luc sur mer, Normandy, France. It dates to the Middle Jurassic Period (Upper Bathonien).

Jurassic Brachiopod Fossil Burmirhynchia elegantula

This brachiopod fossil is known as Burmirhynchia (Hopkinsirhynchia) elegantula (Deslongschamps). It was found in Quarry de L'Echo, Thin-le-Moutier, Ardennes, France. It dates to the Middle Jurassic Period (Upper Bathonien).

Favosites Coral Fossil

This fossil coral was found in Jefferson County, Kentucky USA. It is thought to be some type of Favosites colonial coral fossil. It dates to the Devonian Period. It is about the size of an American men's basketball.

Receptaculites subturbinatus Fossil Algae

These images appear to show fossilized discoidal dasycladacean alga called Receptaculites subturbinatus. It was found in the Waldron Shale of Bartholomew County, Indiana USA. The fossil dates to the Middle Silurian Period (Wenlockian).

These images are of the brachiopod fossil Acanthothiris spinosa (Schlotheim). It was found in the Salperton Limestone, Upper Inferior Oolite (Bajocian). The fossil was found in Nailsworth Gloucestershire, England. It dates to Middle Jurassic Period.

Marginifera lasallensis Brachiopod Fossil

These pictures appear to be a Marginifera lasallensis brachiopod fossil. It was found in the Lenepah Formation of Nowata County, Oklahoma USA. It dates to the Pennsylvanian Period.

Scytalocrinus disparilis Crinoid Calyx Fossil

UPDATE: This fossil was originally identified as an Aphelecrinus bayensis.

The fossil pictured appears to be a Scytalocrinus disparilis (MIller and Gurley) crinoid calyx. It was found in the New Providence Formation of Clark County Indiana USA. This crinoid is known from Crawfordsville and Muldraugh Member of the Borden Formation in Kentucky. The creature existed in the Mississippian Period. The matrix had to be coated with a sealer since it was so soft.
