Devonian Colonial Coral Favosites

Here is one of the best pieces I have ever found in Louisville, Kentucky. It is a large chunk of coral that measures about 11 cm long, 10 cm high, and 9 cm wide. It has lots of facets so I will have to post images of its other sides later.

This first picture looks like a honeycomb. The rock is mostly whitish-gray but has reddish-brown clay stains that I might try to remove with iron out.

This coral is called Favosites and is from the Devonian period.

A close up view of some of the Favosites cells. There is not much evidence of septa or spines.

View of the vertical columns of coralites.
